RADYO5 NEWSFM

DWFM (92.3 FM) – branded Radyo5 92.3 News FM – is an news/talk radio station serving the Mega Manila market. The station is owned by the Nation Broadcasting Corporation, a subsidiary of PLDT Beneficial Trust Fund's broadcasting division MediaQuest Holdings. The station's all-news format is co-branded with News5, the news department of the television channel TV5—which MediaQuest Holdings acquired a majority stake of from Media Prima in 2010. The station's studio is located in TV5 Media Center, Reliance cor. Sheridan Sts., Mandaluyong City, while its transmitter is located on Block 3, Emerald Hills, Sumulong Highway, Antipolo City. Radyo5 operates 24 hours a day except during Holy week where it leaves the air on Maundy Thursday until Black Saturday. It resumes on Easter Sunday at 04:00 am.

DWFM signed on in 1973 as Manila's third FM station, and the Nation Broadcasting Corporation's first FM station. DWFM began as "MRS 92.3—Most Requested Song", airing a format consisting of adult contemporary and easy listening music. DWFM quickly became the top-rated FM station in Manila, and held this title for most of its life. The success of DWFM led NBC to establish other FM stations using a similar format, including Cebu's DYNC in 1975, and Davao's DXFM.

In 1998, NBC was acquired by MediaQuest Holdings, Inc., a broadcasting company owned by the PLDT's Beneficial Trust Fund. With the new ownership, DWFM's format would be changed in 1998 to become a smooth jazz station, Joey @ Rhythms 92.3 (later shortened in 2005 to 923 Joey).Radio executive Francis Lumen assumed the position of president and CEO bringing with him his previous 10 years of managing the now defunct DWCT Citylite 88.3 (now Jam 88.3). Joey went on to target the higher echelon crowd - mostly embassy officials and deejays who were displaced by the departure of Citylite 88.3 in 2003, with a mix of jazz fusion, pop jazz and crossover sound, with a little more of the European jazz flavor. The jazz format would also be implemented on all of NBC's other FM stations, who used other female names for their branding. DWFM's call letters were also changed to DZRU-FM for the period. It was also during this period that NBC entered into a joint venture with MTV Asia for an MTV Philippines feed via NBC's UHF Network (Channel 41). In 2005, the Rhythms tag was dropped in favor of 923 Joey, with the station slogan "It's a Groove Thing". In January 2007, DWFM was taken over by new management, led by radio executives Raymund Miranda and Al Torres, along with sales executive Amy Victa. Together with the new team, the butterfly was dropped from the logo and the official call letters were returned to DWFM, the original call letters of the station. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It began on October 19, 1953, DZAQ, the forerunner of DZMM was the first radio station of the former ABS (Alto Broadcasting System) of the Quirinos under President Elpidio Quirino's brother, Antonio (originally came from the pre-1953 experimental station DZBC). DZAQ features news, variety and music programs on an AM format which then the basis of DZAQ-TV, years later when ABS and CBN were merged into a single network in 1967, DZAQ switched into CBN-owned DZXL, another AM broadcaster simply named as DZXL Radyo Patrol, the pre-martial law station of ABS-CBN until 1972.

However on the night of September 23, 1972, both DZXL, DZYK and DZAQ-TV were halted as Metrocom forces seized ABS-CBN broadcast complex two days after President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law, even DZAQ/DZXL personalities are arrested because of strict censorship as it went off the air, two years after the forced shut down of all radio and television stations, DWWW, a crony-owned AM station of Kanlaon Broadcasting System (KBS) began to air in 1974 which contains not only in news, but also public service programs and music as well. Veteran anchors and new recruits like Johnny de Leon, Rod Navarro, Noli de Castro and Vic Morales are some the announcers of the station, came into DWWW at that time. When the 1986 EDSA Revolution was started for three days, reformist rebels stormed into RPN broadcast complex as DWWW knocked off from the air following the capture of channel 4 on the morning of February 24, 1986. At the end, both DWWW and DWOK of BBC were sequestered by the government.

The fall of the Marcos Regime brought about the return of ABS-CBN. In July 1986, then newly-formed Presidential Commission on Good Government turned two radio stations, DWWW of RPN and DWOK of BBC, back to ABS-CBN. DWWW was renamed DZMM and resumes broadcasting. Lito Balquierda Jr., Vice-President for Radio, spearheaded the return of the giant network to the local broadcasting scene.

PBN RADIO BICOL

PBN Broadcasting Network, Inc., is a Bicolano commercial Radio/TV broadcast media network that consists of three AM stations, two FM stations and two Television stations. PBN Bicol is currently affiliated with TV5 Network, Inc. and Nation Broadcasting Corporation (AksyonTV). Established by Jorge D. Bayona in 1958 when the people of Legazpi City and the province of Albay had never heard of radio, except from faint broadcast signals from Metro Manila stations. PBN pioneered the broadcast industry in the Bicol region by operating the first “cable radio station, “Radyo Balagon”, under the banner of Bicol Wire Broadcasting System (BWBS), the parent company of what PBN Broadcasting Network, Inc. is today.

At the height of its popularity, "Radyo Balagon" as it was fondly called by its subscribers, initially served 3,000 households in Legaspi and the neighboring town of Daraga. With the continuous increase of subscribers, its area of coverage was expanded to the 1st district of Albay via a cable-relay station in the city of Tabaco.

With the success of Bicol Wire Broadcasting System (BWBS), and although technology was still on its infancy in the 60’s, Bicol Wire Broadcasting System evolved into People’s Broadcasting System (PBS) with the establishment in 1960 DZGB-AM, the pioneer commercial radio station in Legaspi. For over 40 years, DZGB-AM reigns on top of delivering news, information, live special events coverage, public affairs programs and entertainment to the Bicolanos. DZGB-AM is already an institution to speak of. No wonder it was awarded the “BEST PROVINCIAL AM STATION NATIONWIDE” by the prestigious KBP Golden Dove Awards for Radio & Television in 2000.

DZGB proved to be the first string of AM stations. Subsequently, a sister station purely dedicated to news and music was opened and named DZGM, the first AM station to adopt an FM programming of less talk, more music. On June 24, 1970, DZMD-AM was inaugurated in Daet, Camarines Norte. Two years later, another station, DZMS-AM started broadcasting in the Province of Sorsogon. The household name of People’s Broadcasting System became People’s Broadcasting Network (PBN) to reflect its founder’s intent to serve its fellow Bicolanos regionwide.

The declaration of Martial Law on September 21, 1972 was the darkest moment in broadcast history. All radio and TV stations nationwide were shut down and PBN was among the casualties. However, PBN’s status as the most credible network in the Bicol Region was affirmed. DZGB Legazpi was immediately allowed to resume its broadcast operation one day after the shut down order, followed by DZMD Daet, Camarines Norte two days later and DZMS Sorsogon after a week.

In 1987, 97.1 DWGB-FM Legazpi aired its maiden broadcast. Barely six months after, it made history when it dominated the local surveys as the most listened to FM station in the area. PBN was on the move. It was not long before everyone realized that the momentum created by these turn of events would prove unstoppable.

With the advent of the 90’s, the network began to consider a move to the ultimate medium: television Realizing the need for a national network with a strong programming capability, PBN entered into and became an affiliate of ABC 5 (now TV5).On March 3, 1995, PBN’s dream of operating its own TV station became a reality. Its local TV shows took Naga City by storm, of which other giants networks found worthy competitor. Inspired by the huge success of DWGB-FM in Legazpi City, PBN decided to open another FM station in a more competitive market- Naga, on July 3, 1995. With the establishment of PBN TV 5 in Naga, it was just a matter of time before the 2nd TV Station was opened. On June 1995, PBN TV 6 was born in Legaspi. On the same year, People’s Broadcasting Network has changed its corporate name to PBN Broadcasting Network, Inc. with three (3) AM stations, two (2) FM stations and two (2) television stations strategically positioned in the key cities and provinces in the region that practically covers the entire Bicolandia.

Until today, PBN is focusing its vision of being responsive to the needs of its fellow Bicolanos - a network that achieves gains with honor and dignity.   From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
